Readers: Erin Caveny is the girlfriend, fiancé, and, eventually, wife of the teacher/coach/ghost whisperer and hero of the award-winning Haunted Shores Mysteries—Darrell Henshaw. The two of them met in the first entry (and #1 Amazon Best Seller), Blood on the Chesapeake and fell in love. Then, in the second, Crimson at Cape May, their relationship went on the rocks for a while until they rescued it together. In the third installment out this year, Scarlet at Crystal River, Darrell and Erin are married and heading on their honeymoon, until they get derailed by some desperate ghosts.
Question: Your boyfriend, Darrell Henshaw, has been interviewed several times, but readers haven’t had the chance to hear directly from you. We’re delighted to have you with us here on my blog. What would you like to share with our readers first?
Erin: Thanks so much for having me. I love the part I play in these tales, but I’m thrilled to have a voice here. I think first I’d like to say thanks to all the readers who’ve written in to say how much they enjoy my character in the stories. From their comments, it appears I have some kindred spirits out there.
Question: Our readers are dying to know what’s it like to be, you know, with a guy like Darrell.
Erin: Well, he’s geeky, but pretty good looking too and he’s pretty good in…oh, that’’s not what you meant. Okay, then, he’s thoughtful and considerate, even though he has that OCD thing…and the thing about ghosts. But that’s okay, we all have our secrets. He and I are both dedicated to children—he’s a teacher and I’m an OB nurse. And, like I’ve told Darrell several times, life with him is never boring. Excitement, suspense, and thrills just seem to find Darrell—or I should say the ghosts find Darrell and they bring the rest. I love not knowing what’s next and helping Darrell cope with it.
Question: In the new novel, Scarlet at Crystal River, you and Darrell travel to Florida for your honeymoon, which is interrupted by a pair of ghosts. Didn’t you resent having to detour your romantic plans to go ghost chasing?
Erin: I have to admit when I first found out about the ghosts’ intrusions, I was pretty pissed. Well, I’m not sure what I was more upset about, the ghosts haunting Darrell or him not leveling with me about it. But, as I began to get pieces of the story and looked into those little kids’ eyes, I knew we had to find a way to help them. Darrell and I have the rest of our life together—and, believe me, we have plenty of romantic plans—but the young children needed our help now. Besides we still got to do plenty of cool stuff, like running the beautiful Withlacoochee Bay Trail, playing in the surf in December and swimming with manatees. Wait till you read about it. It was an unforgettable experience.
Question: You know we have to ask this one question: do you really believe in ghosts?
Erin: Of course, the answer is yes. Before I met Darrell I wasn’t sure. You’d probably call me a skeptic then. But after everything I’ve seen with Darrell—okay I can’t see what Darrell sees, but I’ve seen plenty—ghosts writing on mirrors, ghosts leaving messages on paper and those shimmering images of the two kids on our photos from Florida. How could I not believe?
Question: So, what’s next for you and Darrell? You’re married now, both of you working back in Wilshire. Any talk of kids or a family?
Erin: Whoa, let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. Darrell and I are only 27, and our biological clocks are purring away just fine. We both love our jobs, but we also both want kids. We haven’t set any timetable on the family stuff. I think we’ll just let nature take its course. And Darrell can do pretty well in that department. (Wink)
He is talking about a trip back to his home in Michigan, maybe in the summer months when he has some time off. He wants me to meet the rest of the family, including his Aunt Bessie, who owns this big place on Lake Erie. Sounds like fun.
Thanks, Erin, for joining us here. Readers can learn more about this interesting character by picking up any one—or better yet, all three—of the Haunted Shores Mysteries, BLOOD ON THE CHESAPEAKE, CRIMSON AT CAPE MAY and SCARLET AT CRYSTAL RIVER.
